From Dijon to Beaune: History, Vineyards & Gastronomy

Dijon is world-famous for its mustard—but there’s so much more to discover! The architectural, cultural, and culinary richness of the former duchy’s capital continues to surprise visitors.

Start with the Parcours de la Chouette, a charming walking tour through Dijon’s old town. Don’t miss the Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne, the Museum of Fine Arts (free entry!), and the Tour Philippe le Bon for panoramic views over the city.

Stop by the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin to browse the gourmet market or enjoy a delicious break in one of its restaurants.

Then, head south toward Beaune along the legendary Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne.
Visit wine cellars and enjoy tastings (responsibly—or after parking your van for the night 😉). Don’t miss the Clos de Vougeot Castle, built in the 12th century by the monks of Cîteaux Abbey.

In November, the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction draws international visitors from around the world. Even outside this event, the old hospital with its iconic Burgundian rooftops is a must-see, along with the many restaurants, wine bars, and cellars that bring the town to life.

Extend your trip:

  • South: follow the vineyards along the Côte Chalonnaise and into Beaujolais

  • East: discover the Jura, its mountains, lakes, and waterfalls

  • West: head into the Morvan Regional Natural Park for nature hikes and wild swimming

Hiking, climbing, trail running, mountain biking, gravel biking, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing… Renting a van from Dijon opens the door to endless adventure.

Start just 30 minutes away in the charming town of Dole, then continue toward the Haut-Jura Regional Park.
Explore the stunning lakes of Jura—Vouglans, Chalain, Bonlieu, or the 4 Lakes of Narlay, Ilay, Petit and Grand Maclu—overlooked by the Pic de l’Aigle and its scenic viewpoint. Perfect for open water swimming, SUP, or family bathing.

Don’t miss the famous Cascades du Hérisson, one of Jura’s most beautiful natural sites.

Prefer the mountains? Head to Les Rousses, right on the Swiss border. This resort offers activities year-round: skiing, mountain biking, trail running, hiking, and climbing.

Want to go even higher? Climb to the Crêt de la Neige, the highest peak in the Jura (1,720m), with views all the way to Mont Blanc.

The Doubs department and its capital, Besançon, are also great outdoor destinations. The Métabief resort is perfect for van travel and adventure.

And if you’re ready to go further: in less than 3 hours, reach the Alps, the Vosges Mountains, or even Switzerland with its legendary lakes and peaks.
