Weekend at the sources of the Canal du Midi

Start your journey in Sorèze, an ancient Gallic village, bordered by the Orival. You can discover 2 amazing universes: the abbey-school, prestigious establishment, and the imaginary world of tapestries in Dom Robert’s museum. Then head to Lake Saint-Ferréol for a few days. Walking, biking, sailing, sunbathing, swimming or pedal boating, there will be something for everyone. Take advantage of this natural space for a picnic on the shores of the lake, admiring the sun setting before spending a pleasant night in your fitted out van. Then take the direction of Revel where the atypical awaits you Museum of Wood and Marquetry.
Also in Revel, don’t miss the town market, ranked among the 100 most beautiful markets in France, which is held on Saturday mornings. After being amazed at the market, treat yourself to a walk or bike ride following the Greenway, a pleasant and shaded course of 15km. Then go to the history of the Canal du Midi at the Seuil de Naurouze. The highest point of the Canal du Midi, it is here that the waters are shared between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. End your trip to Bonrepos, by visiting the castle of Pierre-Paul Riquet. Bucolic gardens and hydraulic installations await you!

Weekend in Cathar land

Start your escapade in the magnificent city of Carcassonne, which overlooks the hill, adorned with its 52 towers. Enter through the Porte Narbonnaise. Explore the city on foot, bustling with restaurants and shops, lingering in the Comtal castle and in the Saint-Nazaire basilica. Continue your journey outside the city, on the side of the bastide Saint-Louis and let yourself be tempted by a peaceful boat trip on the Canal du Midi.
Then head for the castles of the Cathar country : Lastours, Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Termes, Aguilar : they are called “vertigo citadels” as their panoramas are breathtaking. Visit these unmissable fortresses built on top of rocky outcrops. End your trip by criss-crossing the cross roads between the Corbières massif, the foothills of the Montagne Noire and the shores of the Mediterranean. Admire the vines as far as the eye can see and take the opportunity to succumb to a food and wine pairing, in this region where you will find a good concentration of Michelin starred chefs.

Weekend in medieval cities

Start your tour of medieval Ariège with the Château de Foix. He dominates the world from the top of his rock. At the top of the keep, you can admire the Pyrenees peaks. On the outskirts of the goal, the city has kept its period charm and treats you to festivals and medieval days in May, August and October. Then take the direction of Montségur castle, perched on its ridge at 1200m altitude. After 30 minutes of climbing, your efforts will be rewarded by the extraordinary view of the Pyrenees which will be offered to you, and by the atmosphere of the place. In the village at the foot of the mountain, you will find the Montségur museum which will tell you about the Cathar heresy and the terrible crusade that followed in the 12th century.
Take advantage of your locality to contemplate the splendid sunset, from the remains of the castle. Then head to the UNESCO-listed village of Saint Lizier. You will see the only Romanesque cloister in Ariège and sumptuous frescoes. Take a walk around the Notre Dame de la Sède cathedral which offers a breathtaking view of Saint-Lizier, Saint-Girons and the Couserans. Finish your journey with a stopover in Mirepoix. Lined with half-timbered houses, it is made for conviviality, with its cafes and craft shops.
